********************************

These cushion covers are the second and third patterns that I ever knitted. I felt that a jumper, or a top was a bit too adventurous, as I’d only been knitting for a few months at this stage. I had a quick search online and found these fantastic patterns by Helen Ardley.

The back, and part of the front of each cushion, are wide rib, which was great for a knitter just starting out. For the half & half cushion (below), I used some spare aran yarn that my mum had in the house. It was so long ago, and I didn’t keep the labels so I’ve no idea what it was unfortunately. For the cable flap cushion (above), I used the same cream aran, and I got some regular DK yarn from the shop. Again I don’t know which brand.

I completed the half & half cushion without any problems. When I got to the cable section of the cable flap cushion, I couldn’t understand why it wasn’t working. It kept getting really tight, and it didn’t seem to be growing correctly. Luckily enough I had my super knitter of a mum with me, who quickly noticed a small mistake in the pattern. It says that every other row (after rows 1 & 2) is the same as row 2. This meant that I kept using the cable needle for every row. At this stage I had no idea what I was doing really, and so I was just following the pattern exactly. Mum explained that you can’t cable every row, and so the pattern should be repeat row 1 for every other row. Mum to the rescue! After we sorted that out I had no problems with the rest of the pattern.

I think these patterns are great and I’d recommend them for anyone.
